Red-Breasted Merganser Hen Smoothie 2019
This merganser hen was a departure from my normally highly textured and wood burned decorative birds. I wanted to try establishing detail and feather softness with just layers of acrylic paint. Main feather groups are carved but most detail is created with the paint. This "smoothie" is approximately 13" long and is acrylic on cedar and basswood. Won 2nd best of species and 2nd best sea duck at 2019 Wisconsin Waterfowl association show. Artist's collection.

Red Breasted Merganser Smoothie Pair
This outstanding pair of Mergansers is a change for me as the feathers are not carved and fully detailed like most of my birds. Instead, the feather details are painted on each bird. The drake has a "mane" like the actual bird, made of horse hair.
Common Loon 2021
A full detail 3/4 sized common loon. The body is 16" long Approx 21" tail to tip of the bill 5.5" wide 8.5" tall. This beautiful loon is heavily textured and wood burned to show all the feathers. It is then painted in acrylics to reveal the subtly iridescent head with shades of green, blue, and violet. Hand-carved from basswood.
